Armor Up Lesson 1 Activity
Much like Max, how we appear on the outside can look very different from how we feel on the inside. As the story begins, we meet Max and find out that he worries about big things, small things, but really about all things. The best way he knows to protect himself is to be as prepared as possible so no new situation can catch him off guard. Life tends to throw surprises our way all the time and what Max will soon learn is that he does not have to worry about which protective gear to put on, God’s Word and God’s armor is all he needs and it is really very easy to put on and keep on.
This activity will get your boys fired up and excited about the study! Who doesn’t love to make a sword?! You heard me right, they will be making swords! You will actually be giving them the supplies to make a weapon…God’s weapon. It comes with privilege and responsibility and bears the weight of God’s goodness and truth. The sword will prove to be a meaningful reminder and will empower them as they are given the opportunity to be bold and be courageous in their faith. They will creatively wrap their swords with colorful tape and prepare it for battle. The finishing touch will be the most important piece…God’s Word (Hebrews 4:12). The Sword of the Spirit is the Bible and it is the piece of armor God gives us to fight against lies and bad thoughts. We have a weapon, given to us by God, that will help us handle what life throws at us. When we lean into that and we choose God, we will feel the courage we need to fight and the peace that only He can provide.
*Bonus Activity Idea (leader discretion): Wad up a bunch of pieces of paper (these represent lies and negative thoughts trying to sneak in). Have the boys stand opposite you at a distance away in a line or spaced out (could be done in partners as well). Throw the balls of paper toward them and have them whack them with their swords…knocking those ideas away with the armor of God!

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
